Hispanics and Family-Friendly Restaurants

The vast majority (78 percent) of Hispanic households are family households, compared to 66 percent for all U.S. households. According to the Hispanic Foodservice Consumer Trend Report, this translates into a stronger preference for family-friendly restaurants among Hispanic consumers.

Bob Evans Reports Fiscal 2012 First-Quarter Results
Consolidated net sales were $405.4 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2012, a 1.7 percent decrease compared to $412.6 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2011. The sales decrease was the result of lower same-store sales in the restaurant segment, partly offset by sales increases in the foods segment. The restaurant segment reported net sales of $333.2 million, a 2.9 percent decrease compared to $343.1 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2011. Same-store sales at Bob Evans Restaurants decreased 1.8 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2012, with average menu prices up 1.3 percent. At Mimi's Cafe, same-store sales decreased 4.8 percent, with average menu prices up 4.2 percent.

Country Style Cooking Restaurant Chain Reports Second Quarter 2011 Financial Results
Country Style Cooking Restaurant Chain Co., Ltd, a fast-growing quick service restaurant chain in China, today announced unaudited financial results for the second quarter of 2011. Revenues in the second quarter of 2011 were RMB234.3 million ($36.3 million), an increase of 39.4% from RMB168.0 million in the same quarter of 2010. Comparable restaurant sales increased by 6.3% from the same quarter of 2010. There were 88 restaurants in the comparison. Restaurant level operating margin was 15.6%, a decrease of 170 basis points from a year ago.

Flanigan's Enterprises Inc (BDL) filed Quarterly Report for the period ended 2011-07-02. McDonald's McCafé: An evolution
Over the past several years, McDonald’s Corp.’s sales growth has outpaced many of its major quick-service peers in the United States. While company executives credit a balanced approach of marketing core products, its Dollar Menu and premium items like Angus Third Pounders, they also regularly have cited the McCafé beverage line as a major sales driver. Paneras in Southwest Ohio Run to Raise Money and Awareness
Panera Bread announces the return of its Southwest Ohio Panerathons in Cincinnati and Dayton. Both events include a 5K walk/run and a Panera Kids Fun Run; a quarter-mile course that is free for children 12 and younger. The fourth annual Cincinnati Panerathon 5K will be held on Saturday, September 10. The race will take place across the street from the Union Center Panera Bread located at 9444 Civic Center Boulevard in West Chester. The 5K walk/run will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the Panera Kids Fun Run starting just beforehand at 8:30 a.m.

Subway launches catering platters across Middle East region

Subway expands gluten-free test
Subway expands gluten-free test Subway quietly began testing gluten-free rolls and brownies in the Dallas market in January. Those items have since made their way onto menus in a handful of Portland, Ore., outlets, with company plans to get the entire 500-plus-unit market in trial within the next month. The possibility of Subway's gluten-free tests expanding even further is real, but the process will be slow and meticulous, according to Mark Christiano, the chain's Baking Specialist in the R&D Department.

Patent-infringement lawsuit names major pizza chains
Ameranth Inc. is claiming several major pizza chains have infringed on its patents when launching functions, including online/mobile ordering, reservations and ticketing that require Ameranth's patents for wireless/web synchronization. The company filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Pizza Hut Inc., Pizza Hut of America Inc., Domino's Pizza Inc., Domino's Pizza LLC, Papa John's USA Inc., OpenTable Inc., GrubHub Inc., Netwaiter LLC and LaughStub LLC, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California in San Diego.

Restaurants get in touch with biometrics
The days of buddy punching time cards may be numbered for sneaky employees trying to work the system. Advances in technology and lower prices have allowed more quick-service operators to adopt biometrics as part of their loss prevention plans. Although these fingerprint readers have been in existence for more than 10 years, there has been a "major uptick and widespread adoption" within the past 12 months, according to Gary Oberman, business development manager, OEM and development sales at DigitalPersona, a provider of the technology.

Starbucks Via expanding through six Asia Pacific countries
Starbucks Coffee Company announced it will expand the Starbucks VIA Ready Brew to six additional countries, bringing its availability to all Starbucks locations in Asia. Producer Price Indexes - July 2011
The Producer Price Index for finished goods rose 0.2 percent in July, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This advance followed a 0.4-percent decrease in June and a 0.2-percent rise in May. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods moved up 0.2 percent in July, and the crude goods index declined 1.2 percent. On an unadjusted basis, prices for finished goods moved up 7.2 percent for the 12 months ended July 2011.
